What Sets Lake Valhalla Club’s Legacy Apart

Lake Valhalla Club is a private membership athletics club located in Montville, NJ. We’re more than just a sports club or a wedding hall. Lake life at LVC means something special for our members, those who trust us to make their celebrations perfect, and our community.

Community Involvement

Lake Valhalla Club wouldn’t be what it is without the wonderful community we’re privileged to be part of. We’re proud to give back to our community. For example, we were glad to sponsor Lakeland Hills Family YMCA’s 2024 Mountain Lakes Turkey Trot, a fun and festive guided two-mile hike to the Lake Valhalla Overlook held on Thanksgiving morning.

An Exclusive Club Membership to Your Own Slice of Heaven on Earth

There’s a reason our picturesque lake is named “Valhalla.” Taken from ancient Norse mythology, the name means “dwelling place of the Gods,” and we’re sure that you, like generations of members before you, will agree that Lake Valhalla Club in Montville, NJ, is heaven on Earth. Our amenities include a softball field, a sand volleyball court, five tennis courts, three paddle tennis courts heated for use during colder months, and four pickleball courts. Members of our exclusive club enjoy every aspect of lake life at LVC, including social and competitive sports leagues, waterfront activities of all varieties, private lessons, kids’ activities, and member events. With year-round activities, programming, and events, Lake Valhalla Club is the place to be in every season.

The Story of Lake Valhalla

Lake Valhalla has a long, rich history dating back to the first Native Americans in the area, known as the Delawares. For all its exceptional natural beauty, Lake Valhalla Club was carefully cultivated into an exclusive country club by a group of visionary men in 1928. Founder and inaugural President of the Lake Valhalla Estates Arthur D. McAllister, senior member of A. D. McAllister Co., purchased the property from the Capstick Estate. Mr. McAllister’s fellow founding members and early contributors included:

  • A lawyer, Mr. H. Theodore Sorg of the law firm of Sorg, Duncan & Bailey, who served as legal counsel, Vice President, and Secretary of Lake Valhalla Estates
  • An executive, Mr. Walter Lloyd, who was President of the Benjamin V. Harrison Co. of New York City and who served as Chairman of the Advisory Board of Lake Valhalla Estates
  • A banker, Mr. Edwin Merrill, who was the Executive Officer of the First National Bank and Trust Company of Pompton Lakes, NJ, and who contributed to establishing the estate’s strong early foundation
  • A real estate broker, Mr. Clarence A. Taylor, who negotiated the original sale of the property that became Lake Valhalla Estate and, later, Lake Valhalla Club
  • An engineer, Mr. Allen H. Summerville, who furnished Lake Valhalla Estates with its first boundary survey and who was in charge of planning and supervising construction work on structures that included the golf course, roads, and bridges
  • An architect, Mr. Francis G. Hasselman, of New York City, who designed the Club building and many dwellings constructed at Lake Valhalla Estates as the corporation’s Supervising Architect
  • A doctor, Mr. Carl H. Wintsch, who served as a prominent practicing physician and surgeon in Newark, NJ, for many years, and who designated Lake Valhalla as the one spot within the Metropolitan area where one could escape the smoke, dust, and noise of the city and be healed by nature

From its earliest days, these men intended Lake Valhalla Club to be a delightful playground for all ages, entertaining adults and children with waterfront exercise, sports, and immersion in the scenic beauty of nature. The original Lake Valhalla Estates encompassed 750 acres of mountains, forests, and clear water. In the decades since our beautiful private club’s founding, we have worked tirelessly to maintain and update our grounds without compromising the natural beauty that is at the heart of our destination. Today, we have developed 108 acres of exclusive club property within this land, including a Tudor-style Clubhouse that dates back to the 1930s. In the Clubhouse, where our indoor member events are held and private special occasions are celebrated, you’ll find our main dining facilities (with both formal and casual options) and our Ballroom.
